Okulovka as the industrial center began its development last century especially when the Moscow-St. Petersburg railway has been built. The Paper factory was built on the bank of the Peretna river. The pack paper was its first production. It was used for packing sugar and other things. Then the factory of sackcloth production was opened in Kulotino and the famous time works began to output the production on its own source of raw materials.
The place of beauties, riches of natural resource, soft climate, fresh air, wonderful landscape, the lakes full of fish and forest full of mushrooms and berries have become one of the main attractions of our region for famous people and tourists. The lake "Lnyanoe" (the grange "Uteshenie") was visited by the famous Russian writer Lev Tolstoi. N. A. Rimskii - Korsakov composed his famous opera "Kashey Unhealthful" in the stealing Krapachukha. near the village Smeshino, in 1901.
The great children's writer Vitali Bianki studied the nature of our region, wrote different stories hunted in our forest. He was the author of "The wood Newspaper". Zheleznov, the Russian botanist scientist, the founder of the Timiryazev Academy lived in the steadying "Matveiko".
The Okulovka land gave Russia and the world N. N. Mikluha - Maklai, the great traveler and humanist. He was born in 1846 in the village "Rozhdestvenskoe". His father led the building of the first railway and bought a two-storied home in Yazikovo, the university in Germany, he became a great ethnograph, studied the life of the natives of New Guinea. Many streets, scientific institutions parts of the coast of New Guinea island were named after this man.
Present day Okulovka is the region which can guarantee the economic stability and the growth of perspectives for Russia.
